Course Projects, Capstone, and Dissertation Applications

Use current-term official information

Capacity, eligibility, topics, approvers, and deadlines change by term. Group chats and shared spreadsheets are leads only; verify the final state in the current official course system and notices.

Purpose

Describe the general preparation and confirmation process for applying to ME5100, ME5400, Capstone, Dissertation, or other course projects through laboratory research projects.

Prerequisites

  • Confirm the course code, eligibility, credits, timetable, and registration window on the current-term course page.
  • Confirm that the research direction matches the course learning objectives.
  • Evaluate conflicts among on-site experiments, coursework, and research commitments.
  • Prepare a summary of background, relevant skills, interests, and available time.

Procedure

  1. Confirm eligibility in the official course system; a group-chat signup or shared-spreadsheet entry is not enrollment.
  2. Select an area from Research Directions and Project Opportunities.
  3. Contact the relevant Project Coordinator through the controlled directory and submit your background and interest.
  4. Discuss the task, on-site attendance, deliverables, intellectual property, and data-confidentiality requirements with the owner.
  5. If the course requires an approval letter, supervisor approval, or self-proposed-project form, obtain formal confirmation before the current-term deadline.
  6. Complete course or project submission in the official system and retain the receipt.

Suggested Application Materials

  • Name and university account information, submitted only through an approved form
  • Course code, project direction, and current term
  • Relevant coursework, engineering, or research experience
  • Available time and on-site experiment availability
  • Skills matching the project and expected learning goals

Verification

  • The official system shows the correct course or project status.
  • Formal confirmation has been received from the course, supervisor, or project owner.
  • No unresolved conflict remains with other courses, work, or on-site experiments.
  • Personal information does not appear in the public Wiki, Issues, or repositories.

Troubleshooting

  • Name appears in a shared sheet but not the official system: treat the official system as authoritative and ask the course administrator to investigate.
  • Capacity or topic differs from a group-chat message: recheck the current-term course notice.
  • Approval letter not received: do not treat verbal interest as approval; contact the owner promptly.
  • Course and project schedules conflict: resolve the conflict with both owners before the registration deadline.
  • Still interested after unsuccessful registration: use the controlled interest form and wait for the owner to confirm next steps.
